Celebrations of Culture from Around The World

Christmas in July? How about a toga-themed party? How revolutionary… until it’s not. If you’re tired of the same old event themes, then chances are so too are your guests. Why not try something a bit left field and get inspired by these celebrations from around the world?

You’ll get serious street cred points for originality, as well as educating your guests about other cultures. It’s a win-win, really.

Best suited for corporate Christmas parties, these themes can be used for the launch of new products in other countries. Check out these celebrations of culture from around the world.

AgitÁgueda Art Festival, Portugal

This is a great idea but only for a rooftop party (after all, you may have some superstitious guests who won’t want to be near an open umbrella indoors!) Every July since 2006, AgitÁgueda has been presenting daily music concerts to acknowledge and support local artists. Over the course of 23 days, visitors and locals are treated to art installations, performances, and street art.

Decorating tip: Find the brightest collection of umbrellas in block colours and hang from invisible wire.

Dia De Los Muertos, Mexico

Not to be confused with Cinco de Mayo, Dia De Los Muertos honours and celebrates the lives of loved ones who’ve passed away. Taking place every year on November 2, this festival is anything but solemn. Think of it as an explosion of colours, music and rituals that are meant to bring the spirits of the deceased back to life for one joyful day.

Decorating tip: Scatter sugar skulls around the event space.

Oktoberfest, Germany

Gaining popularity right here in Australia and other parts of the world, Oktoberfest is a two-week pop-up of beers in Munich. As the name suggests, this event is held in October for a few weeks, encouraging and enticing locals and tourists alike to taste the best beers known to mankind.

Decorating tip: Match your tabletops with Bavarian blue and white check covers.

Festival of Colours, India

Held annually in spring to mark the beginning of this season, this Hindu celebration is better known as Holi. People are invited to smear vibrant and beautiful colours on each other in jest.

Decorating tip: Get floor stickers of colourful rangoli in obscure and beautiful patterns.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico

Albuquerque is reputedly home to the best climate, winds and infrastructure that is most ideal for hot air balloon flying conditions. During early October every year, over 550 hot air balloons are launched into the air – some even arriving from all corners of the globe.

Decorating tip: Hot air balloon decals everywhere! The brighter, the better.
